We are past the April filing deadline so at this point you’ve hopefully done one of two things.

Filed and received a refund or figured out how much you owe (if any).

Filed for an extension.

In our newsletter for this quarter, we’re going to focus on those of you who have already filed and are getting or already received a refund.

I Got a Refund!

There’s an interesting psychological phenomenon that happens during tax season.

There is a level of excitement that’s seemingly unanimous when it comes to getting a refund from the IRS. It’s so interesting to me at this point in my life knowing what I know, but I was once part of said phenomenon.

First, I think it’s important to understand what a refund is and then clarify what a tax refund is.

Refund: to return (money) in restitution, repayment, or balancing of accounts.

Return in restitution (a restoration of something to its rightful owner). Repayment. Balancing of accounts.

To get a refund, you’re getting something back that already belongs to you.

Tax Refund: a reimbursement to taxpayers who have overpaid their taxes.

When you get a tax refund, you’re getting back money that is already yours and has been for the past 12 months.

I know many people who are excited to get their refund and use it to do fun things or practical things.

I don’t want to make anyone feel shame about being happy for getting money back. In fact, I know many people do good things with their refunds. Things like paying off some debt, taking a family trip, or building up their emergency fund.

None of those things are bad and tax refunds aren’t inherently bad. I merely want to make sure everyone understands what they’re actually getting.

I think in the interest rate environment that we’re currently in, it’s even more important.

Interest-Free Loan

I bet if I polled every person in America and asked them if they would loan the US government a few thousand dollars for the next year at 0% interest, not one single person would say yes (if they were being honest).

Would you? Be honest.

You might do that for a family member or a close friend, but the government or a big company that has way more money than you or I could ever imagine? No way.

If we were going to loan the government money or a big corporation or even a super-wealthy person, we’d fully expect to get some interest paid on the money we lent.

That’s the thing though, a tax refund is exactly that, an interest-free loan. When you get your $5,000 back from the government, you’ve essentially let them borrow your money at no interest for the past year.

Currently, there are money market accounts with 7-day yields in the mid to upper 4’s and online savings accounts currently in the mid to high 3’s. If you’d invested in one of these, you could’ve earned $175-$240 on that $5,000 over the past year.

Better yet, you could have used the $416/month ($5,000/12) to pay off that credit card debt you have with a 24% interest rate. Or the student loan or car note at 6-10%.

Or you could’ve saved $416/month into your kid’s 529 account for their college education.

Or you could’ve saved $416/month more into your 401(k). This actually would’ve reduced your taxable income even more.

Let’s say instead of getting a refund, you did the above for the next 30 years.

What kind of impact could that have?

If you saved an additional $416/month into your 401(k) or any long-term investment account really, you’d have close an additional $400,000 in your account. (This assumes a 6% average rate of return).

All you have to do is give up your tax refund and reallocate the money that’s already yours toward something meaningful.

Why is it So Hard?

When you look at the math, it makes all the sense in the world to keep the money that’s already yours and use it wisely towards one of your goals.

If it’s that simple, why don’t more people do it?

There are a few reasons in my opinion.

The first is that as far as I can remember, getting a tax refund has always been seen (by the masses) as a good thing.

I’ve heard things like it’s “free money” which is ironic because that’s exactly what it was just not in the way they are describing it.

I do get the sentiment though. It was money that was not currently in their possession, therefore, it’s extra money they did not have. Psychologically that feels good.

The second reason is I don’t think many people understand why they get a refund and/or what to do about it.

Many of the folks we work with are self-employed, run a small business, or have some sort of side hustle where their income isn’t easily predictable. Most in this category don’t end up getting a tax refund so our tax planning is a little different.

The majority of people who get refunds are W-2 employees. Their income is pretty predictable. Many times, their withholdings directly impact whether or not or how much of a refund they will get every year.

If you receive a refund every year and you’d like to put that money to work instead of loaning it to the government, take a look at your withholdings. Ask your CPA or visit the IRS website to figure out what you can do to get closer to breaking even every year.

Once you’ve made these adjustments, look at the difference it makes in your next paycheck. Then put that money to work for you and your goals.

Lastly, and this is my opinion, most people aren’t using their money wisely already so having a couple of hundred dollars a month extra would just end up being spent frivolously or wasted anyways.

I again get this sentiment. It’s pretty easy to waste a few hundred dollars each month. But when you get a check or deposit for a few thousand dollars, that at least makes you think about what you’re going to do with the money.

What Now?

I think the best place to start is by looking back over the past several years to see if there is any consistency to your tax situation.

From there, if you’re consistently getting a refund, I think the next step is asking yourself some questions. And answer them honestly.

What are you currently doing with your tax refund?

What could you do if you got that money over 12 months instead of a lump sum?

If you make changes to your withholdings that lead to an increase in your monthly take home pay, will you actually put that additional money to good use?

The answers to these questions will help you to know wether or not you should consider making changes.

The answers may lead you to discover your need some help with implementation or accountability. If so, go interview some good financial planners and hire someone who will help you with this and more.

Monthly Minute

Be on the lookout this quarter for more helpful planning information in our upcoming Monthly Minute releases.

GET TO KNOW OUR TEAM

This past quarter we launched into 2023. Lee and Susanne celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary by taking their family to Atlantis in the Bahamas! This involved lots of fun in the sun, good food, and some really cool encounters with sea turtles!

The new year always seems to bring with it some promise. It’s like a mini-fresh start. Many people come up with New Year’s resolutions. Almost all of those fail in some way, shape, or form.

So I want to talk about something other than resolutions. I want to talk about disciplines/routines you build into your life.

Here are three disciplines/routines that, if you implement them, will improve your financial situation and your quality of life.

Plan

Imagine getting on a big boat headed out to sea. You’re hoping to go to a tropical island.

You’ve got food and water to keep you fed and healthy on that boat. You have your family with you and some entertainment.

At first, it might be exciting. Will you end up in the Bahamas or Turks and Caicos? Or Fiji or the Maldives?

The longer you’re on the water, you begin to wonder how long the trip will be. Do you have enough food and water to last the journey? What happens if the boat needs repairs?

As you approach land, you don’t see any other people on shore. It looks desolate.

What started as an adventure with hopes of ending up on a tropical island was a long trip to a place you never wanted to go.

Now imagine the same scenario. This time you know you want to go to Barbados.

As you set out, you have a clear direction. Having a plan doesn’t mean everything will go smoothly.

You could run into bad weather, the currents could change, or your boat could need repairs.

In all of these scenarios, knowing your final destination will help you make the adjustments needed to get there.

The same is true for your financial future. If you don’t have a plan, you hope it will work out. If you look at statistics, it doesn’t work for most.

More people end up on the metaphoric desolate island than the tropical paradise they’d hoped for.

Action Steps:

Hire someone to be your metaphoric captain and guide you to your destination.

If you don’t want to do step one, take some time to think of some goals you have.

The goals don’t have to be huge or long-term but must be defined.

Some examples might be paying for your kids’ college education, buying a vacation home, taking your family to Disney or another destination, etc.

Once you have some goals laid out, figure out what it will take to accomplish them.

For many, this is hard, and that is why many don’t plan in the first place. When they get to this part, sometimes their goals seem impossible, so they stop there.

If you want to take a trip, do your best to project what it will cost. Then figure out how much you need to save each month to fund that goal. The same goes for any other goal you have.

Prioritize your goals.

Part of planning is understanding that you may not be able to do everything you want to do. At least not based on the information you have today.

The great thing is, things change. Maybe paying for your kid’s education is important to you, but it isn’t something you can set aside money for right now. By the time your kid is old enough to go to college, they’ve earned a scholarship, you’ve gotten promoted twice, and you can afford to cover the difference from cash flow.

Do something

You may need to focus on realistic goals. Once you’ve prioritized, take action on the goals you can do something about.

How This Helps Quality of Life

We naturally want to be in control. When you have a plan, know the things you need to do, and you’ve done them, it helps you feel in control of your financial situation.

On top of that, once you have a plan, small bumps in the road are less likely to impact your daily life because you know you’re still heading in the right direction.

All in all, having a plan gives you peace of mind.

Save First

You’ve probably heard someone say “pay yourself first” at some point in your life. There’s a good chance you’ve heard it multiple times.

There’s also a good chance you’ve thought that it sounds like a great idea, but have never actually implemented that idea and if you did, it was because you have a 401(k) plan through your employer.

This concept is probably my favorite thing about 401(k) plans. It forces people to pay themselves first.

The sad truth is that over 50% of Americans are behind on saving for retirement and the median account balance for all Americans is $35,345.

For those 55-64 that number is $89,700. These numbers were startling to me. But why is it this way?

The main reason I think so many people feel behind and account balances are so low is that very few people actually choose to pay themselves first.

If I had to guess, most Americans pay their bills, spend on non-essential things, and then if there’s anything left over, put it into savings.

I understand some circumstances make saving a significant amount or any for that matter nearly impossible. Many times because of things outside of our control.

I would venture to say, most of the time though, the lack of margin in our budget is our own fault.

We bought too much house, bought that car we couldn’t afford, were irresponsible with our credit cards, or any number of things that cause us to spend too much money.

Sometimes it’s not easy to take a look in the mirror, but if we want to get better, we have to start with ourselves and what we can control.

Action Steps:

Refer to the plan we talked about above to figure out how much you need to be saving to achieve a goal you have.

Start small. Whether this is putting money into your 401(k) or setting up an auto draft into your savings account.

Commit to increasing your savings amount by at least 1% per year until you reach your desired savings rate.

Repeat this process at least once per year by reviewing your plan and making needed adjustments.

How This Helps Quality of Life

Prioritizing where your money is going every month gives you a sense of control that we referenced before.

An analogy that works is comparing this to working out. You and I both know all the benefits of eating healthy and exercising consistently. Knowing that though does not make us healthy.

It’s not until we actually start eating healthy and exercising consistently that we reap the benefits of it.

It might be painful at first. Some soreness and cravings for those unhealthy things, but if we stick with it, we know we’ll be better for it in the long run.

The same goes for saving first. It might be a little painful at first. Might not get to eat out as much or we might have to downsize our house in some cases.

In the long run though, it will be better. And the more you do it, just like working out, the easier it will be.

That’s the point where you’ve learned to live within your means. Then you get a raise, and you can bump your savings up first knowing you’re already living well inside your budget.

Spend Your Money Wisely

You’ve been told you should have a budget at some point. While having a budget is good, I also know most families won’t stick with it and stop trying.

This isn’t because they don’t want to. It’s just because most people in America have enough money to live the life they’re used to without needing to keep a close eye on their finances.

Couple that with the fact that people are busier now than ever, and it’s easy to see why keeping up with a budget isn’t at the top of anyone’s list of priorities.

When I say spend money wisely, I’m not specifically talking about keeping a budget. I’m talking about making wise decisions on where you spend your money.

One question I ask everyone I work with is, what do you enjoy spending money on? Pause for a moment and think about that. How would you answer that question?

You can probably guess some of the answers I hear most frequently. Travel, experiences with my spouse/kids, eating out, and insert hobby are a few.

Now, what If I pulled your spending for the last year? Does it reflect that’s where most of your variable spending is going?

That’s the point I’m trying to get across. We all have fixed and necessary expenses like the mortgage, utilities, insurance, food, etc.

After that, though, what are you spending your money on? Are you spending it on things that bring you joy and fill your cup?

Or are you spending it impulsively on things you didn’t even know you wanted (social media ads)?

I’m not here to point any fingers or make anyone feel bad. My wife and I have been trying to be more aware of spending money on the things we love for the past several years, but I still have impulse buys and plenty of Amazon boxes at our front door.

The goal is to raise awareness and look to make adjustments.

Action Steps:

Take some time to think about what you enjoy spending money on. What fills your cup? Do this with your spouse too.

Next, audit your spending for the past 3-6 months. Figure out how much your discretionary spending is each month.

See how much you’re spending towards what fills you up and brings you joy. What percentage is going towards that versus misc spending?

Make a plan to be more intentional about where you’re spending your money.

Repeat steps 2-4 every 6 months or so.

How This Helps Quality of Life

This one seems the most self-explanatory. If you get to a place where you’re intentionally spending money on the things that bring you the most joy, you’re naturally going to be happier.

As you age, these things will change, but it’s always a good idea to keep an eye on how you’re spending your money and if it’s being spent wisely on the things that matter most.

Monthly Minute

Be on the lookout this quarter for more helpful planning information in our upcoming Monthly Minute releases.

Get to Know Our Team

This past quarter we all got to celebrate Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

The Ray family celebrated Kyle’s birthday in November with a trip to Barnsley Gardens.

For others, this could take a little longer.

Once you’ve figured out all the places you will earn income, then you need to understand how that income will be taxed.

If you’re a W-2 employee with no other income, this is pretty straightforward.

If you’re self-employed, you’ve got income from another source, or just have some complexity to your situation this will look a little different.

You may have some ordinary income, some passive income, and some capital gains income. All three of which are taxed differently.

How Much?

Once you’ve taken the time to figure out all the places you’re receiving income, the next step is to figure out how much income you will earn from each of those places.

If you’re a W-2 employee, that will be pretty easy to project. If your income fluctuates based on earning commissions or deals closing, this will be harder. What we like to do is sit with our clients and help them project as best they can based on what they know now.

For interest and dividends, this is pretty easy to look up and project out for the rest of the year. The same can be said for social security and distributions from retirement accounts (especially if they are regular).

As mentioned above, some of this will require some projecting through the end of the year. We understand going into this process the numbers won’t be exact, but it’s still useful to project.

You can be as conservative or aggressive with the projections as you’d like. You can also do both to give yourself a range of where you might land.

What’s Next

After you’ve got a pretty good grip on how much income you will be reporting for the current year and a general understanding of how that income will be taxed, the next step is to figure out what options you have to reduce that number.

Do you have access to a 401(k) or another group-sponsored retirement plan? If you’re not maxing it out ($20,500 if you’re under 50 or $27,000 if you’re 50 or older in 2022), does your current cash flow allow you to increase your contributions?

Do you have an HSA that you’ve been contributing to, or can contribute to? If so, can you increase contributions to max it out? In 2022, for individuals under 55, that amount is $3,650. For families under 55, that amount is $7,300. For those 55 and older, there is a $1,000 catch-up.

You have until you file your taxes next year to make this contribution. For a reminder of the benefits of HSAs go check out our write-up in a newsletter from last year.

Do you plan on making a charitable donation this year? Maybe you had a bigger commission year or larger than expected bonus this year and it’s pushed you into another tax bracket. It might make sense to lump your gifting for the next few years into this year’s gift.

For more information on this refer to our post about charitable giving, specifically the section on Donor Advised Funds.

Another thing you can consider is making contributions to a traditional IRA. This is also something you have until you file your taxes next year to do. Be sure to confirm that you are eligible to deduct your contributions. There are rules on what can be deducted based on access to an employer plan and income levels.

Other Things To Consider

If you’re on Medicare or approaching using Medicare, you should be aware of how your income will impact your monthly premiums. There is a base monthly premium for part B, but if your income is above a certain threshold, you will pay more than the standard amount.

Note, they look at income from two years ago. So if you’re turning 65 in two years, this year is the year they will use to determine what your premium will be. The premium amount is re-evaluated each year and based on income from two years prior.

Have you hit your deductible for this year? If so, is there a procedure or something medical that you need to get done, but haven’t? It might be a good idea to do that before the year ends.

Does your company offer an FSA (flexible spending account)? If so and you haven’t used all the funds, you might want to consider finding a way to use them.

Unlike an HSA, FSA funds typically don’t roll over and you lose them if they aren’t used though there are some ways you can roll over a portion of the funds.

The end of the year is also a good time to make sure you understand your benefits through work if you just finished going through open enrollment.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve been doing things on your own and this isn’t part of your process, I’d recommend adding it. If you feel like it’s too much, but don’t want a long-term relationship with an advisor or planner, find someone who bills hourly or will charge you a one-time fee that can help you with this specifically.

Lastly, if you’re paying a financial advisor and you’re not having these conversations, we’d encourage you to find someone who will. We’d love the opportunity to serve you if the fit is right.

If you’d like to schedule a free call, click here.

Monthly Minute

Be on the lookout this quarter for more helpful information on end of year planning in our upcoming Monthly Minute releases.

Get to Know Our Team

This past quarter was full of fun for our team.

Lee and his family went to the beach over the 4th of July as well as during Fall break.

As we head into the third quarter of 2022, the stock market continues to frustrate many. The S&P 500 officially hit bear territory towards the end of June and the volatility has continued into the start of this quarter.

For those who may have heard the term bear market before but don’t know what it means, I’ll share how the Wall Street Journal defines it.

“Stock’s enter a bear market when widely followed indexes such as the S&P 500 or the Dow Jones Industrial Average sink 20% from the high points.”

Inflation in June of this year was the highest it’s been since December of 1981.

Interest rates are rising, but so are home prices.

Gas prices hitting all-time highs.

Supply chain issues, Ukraine, Covid… Turn on the news and you can hear all the bad news you want to hear. It sounds scary.

A lot of it is.

Bad News Sells

Why does it sell though?

Our brains are naturally drawn to negative thoughts and information. This is called negativity bias.

There was a time when this was extremely helpful (and it still is at times today). Before we had electricity, transportation, and shelter, life was a bit more dangerous for the average person and negativity bias would have helped keep them alive.

Today, most of the world doesn’t face those same dangers but we still tend to focus on the negative and be drawn to it.

I don’t think our minds were built to consume the amount of information we do today. Especially the bad news.

Flashback 100 years and the news was just starting to be spread via the radio. If we go back to the Declaration of Independence, it took almost a month for the people in South Carolina to get the news.

Contrast that to today where you can know about a conflict or major event going on all the way across the globe within minutes of it happening.

That’s not healthy. You may agree but be asking what this has to do with investing. Good question.

This leads to the topic I want to discuss, behavioral finance.

What is Behavioral Finance?

“Behavioral finance is the study of the effects of psychology on investors and financial markets. It focuses on explaining why investors often appear to lack self-control, act against their own best interest, and make decisions based on personal biases instead of facts.”

Plato once said, “Human behavior flows from three main sources: desire, knowledge, and emotion.”

These sources show up in almost all situations. For example, dinner. You desire to be healthy. Emotionally though, let’s say you’re sad or stressed. Cheeseburgers, ice cream, or something else unhealthy sounds really good. You know eating that food isn’t good for you though.

What do you do? Most of the time emotion and desire win out in that situation. You might tell yourself some truths to convince yourself too. Something like: “I’m tired. I don’t feel like cooking anything. It’s just one night, I’ll do better tomorrow.”

That might hit close to home for some of you. I know it does for me.

My point isn’t to make you feel bad. It’s to show how powerful our emotions can be.

So what can you do? I believe there are three things you can do to help.

Get Rid of the Noise

The first thing I would recommend doing is getting rid of the noise.

Are you watching the news, listening to market commentary or podcasts, or constantly checking for updates? Stop would be my recommendation. At least limit how much you intake.

To some this may be easy, to others, you’ve been doing it so long that it might seem impossible.

Here’s a little (not so secret) secret, everyone you’re listening to has an agenda. If you’re going to watch or listen to something, first ask yourself what their agenda is.

Is it to get you to purchase something? Is it to sell ad space to someone else trying to get you to buy something? Is it to get more subscribers? To inform?

You might be thinking to yourself, well you’ve got an agenda too. You’re right, I do. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t hopeful the right people will find my content helpful and want to work with me.

My main goal is to help people think differently and make wise decisions about their money and their future.

Stop Looking

The second thing I would recommend doing is stop checking your portfolio/account.

The more frequently you check your portfolio, the more risky you are likely to feel investing is, and the more likely you are to make changes.

While we discussed negativity bias earlier, the opposite tends to be true when it comes to our memories of previous investments or investing.

We tend to gloss over previous losses or periods of market corrections. We also focus on the good investments made or returns we’ve gotten.

This can lead to investors making decisions in the moment that hurt them in the long run.

Dalbar does a study on investor behavior that proves this theory every year. 2020 was the best year ever for the average investor and they still underperformed the market by 1.31%.

2021 was the opposite. The average equity fund investor earned 18.39%. That sounds pretty good until you hear that the S&P 500 earned 28.71% during that same time period. That’s a difference of 10.32% in a year.

Over the past 30 years, the average investor has underperformed the market by 3.52%.

For reference, $250,000 earning 3.52% over 30 years equals $705,777. That’s a lot of money left on the table.

Zoom Out

Lastly, I would recommend you zoom out. Have you ever heard the saying “can’t see the forest for the trees?”

It’s easy to get too focused on the right now and lose sight of what really matters.

If you start to feel uneasy about what’s going on in the market (which is normal), I’d recommend revisiting your plan.

Turn your focus from what the market is doing to what your goals are and where you’re headed. Short-term market fluctuations almost never have an impact on long-term goals.

When you focus on the long-term plan it allows you to reframe what’s happening and focus on what you can control. Things like how much you’re saving or what your monthly spending is.

Another way to zoom out is to pull back from looking at the market with a short-term view and remind yourself of what the market has done historically.

Obviously what happened in the past doesn’t guarantee anything in the future. It can serve as a good reminder though that the market has done well over long periods of time.

In fact, since 1928, there has never been a 20-year period where the market has had a negative return.

Can You Do This Alone?

Yes. It’s possible for you to build out a good plan and stick to it without letting your emotions impact your decision-making.

There are some people that can do this, but in my opinion, that percentage of people is really low.

If you are not part of that group of people, I would recommend finding a good financial planner. I specify planner because many people will have an investment advisor that only focuses on investments.

I believe if the focus is primarily on your investments, you’re missing the boat. If you have a good financial plan and someone you trust to guide you through the good and bad times, you’re much more likely to make good decisions and avoid pitfalls when the times get tough.

We focus on planning (with investing as a piece of what we do) and would be happy to see if our firm would be a good fit to guide you and your family through the curveballs life throws at you.

Monthly Minute

Be on the lookout this quarter for more helpful information on investing in our upcoming Monthly Minute releases.

Get to Know Our Team

This past quarter was softball and baseball season in the Hyde home. Lee got to coach both Charlotte and Noah’s teams again this Spring.

It was Noah’s first season in coach pitch and he did great!

Charlotte did great as well and her team won the league championship!

The Ray family finalized their move back to Peachtree City.

While it technically happened at the beginning of this quarter, we wanted to celebrate Blair’s first birthday!

She had a fun party and also got to enjoy the 4th with Kyle and Genna!

HOW TO STAY CONNECTED

If you like what you’ve read and would like to get more helpful advice in the future, click the link below to subscribe to our newsletter.

If what you read today has stirred up some questions and you’d like to discuss further. The parable forces us to think about what we ultimately want and is there a way to experience it in some way now instead of waiting most of our life for the chance to do so.

If you look further into the parable, these two characters have some things in common. Both are focused on what they find important, they are resourceful, and they have a plan. In the end, both of them ultimately want the same thing.

This parable makes you think about what really matters. To some people, it may still be more rewarding to chase growth. At least in this season of life. There’s no perfect solution that fits everyone.

That leads to the next step, what is happiness and how do you get it?

What is happiness?

How do you define happiness? Have you ever even thought about that? If not, I invite you to take a few minutes now and consider how you would define it.

If defining happiness is too hard, take some time to think about what makes you happy.

This is a question I ask in my first meeting with every potential client. I think it’s one you should ask yourself too.

The answer to this question will go a long way in answering the question, “can money buy happiness?”

On a more scientific approach, researchers have found that our happiness is made up of three categories.

Genetics: about 50% of our happiness comes from our genetic disposition. There’s nothing we can do about this part.

Environment: things that happen to us out of our control make up about 10% of our happiness. This number was lower than I expected it to be.

Our actions: We have a direct influence on about 40% of our happiness. What and how we think as well as the things we do play a huge role in our happiness.

So if we know these things, why or how do we get off track? Keep reading.

Money As A Drug?

There’s a study done by Hans Maeder and Daniel Kahneman that showed obtaining more money activates the same parts of the brain as illicit drugs.

This sounds crazy, but if you’ve ever been to a casino, you get it. Slot machines are designed to play directly into this fact. They are the biggest money-makers for casinos, but people still flock to them. Why?

Because the sound of the machine going off every time they win activates the same pleasure centers in the brain as someone high on cocaine. Crazy, right?

This isn’t just true in degenerate gamblers though. That’s the scary part. This same truth applies to anyone who makes money. Like with anything else, the bigger the stakes, the more amplified everything seems.

This is evidenced by another study that was done in 2018 by Harvard. It surveyed over 4,000 millionaires and showed that even those with $10MM+ needed a lot more wealth to be happier.

In fact, ~72% of those asked said they would need at least 100% more money to be as happy as they can be!

Don’t want to end up like that? What can you do?

Live Like You Were Dying

There’s an old Tim Mcgraw song that says “someday I hope you get the chance to live like you were dying.”

I think that’s a great thought. Thinking about that specifically has led to bringing up the topic with potential clients when I’m getting to know them.

One question I ask them is what they would do if they found out they only had a year left to live.

While this may seem morbid, my hope in asking it is to find out what’s truly important to people.

There are some fun and wild answers in there like going skydiving or swimming with great white sharks for sure.

Most of the answers I get though are centered around spending quality time with the people they care about most, traveling to places they’ve always wanted to go, and doing the things they’ve always wanted to do but didn’t feel like they had the time to do (write a book, start a business, serve in their community).

There’s some good evidence that supports these answers too.

No Regrets

Bronnie Ware is a nurse who spent many years taking care of people in the last weeks of their life. She ultimately wrote a book titled “The Top 5 Regrets of the Dying.”

Depending on your perspective, you may or may not be surprised to find that making more money wasn’t on the list. But what made the list?

Not having the courage to chase after their dreams or go after what was important to them. Living life “the way they were supposed to” instead of going after what their heart yearned for.

They wished they hadn’t worked so hard. Yup, you read that right. They regretted spending so much time working and not enough on the things that really mattered to them.

They wished they’d learned to express their feelings. They too often played peacemaker instead of sharing how they felt.

They wished they’d done a better job staying in touch with friends. This most likely relates to #2 above.

They wished they’d let themselves be happier. They lived the life they were “supposed to” instead of choosing the things that brought them joy. This relates to #1 above.

Do We Even Need Money To Be Happy?

In short, yes. At least some.

Research shows that depending on where you live and what your cost of living is, there is a certain level of income that seems to be the tipping point for a person’s overall happiness.

A big takeaway was that once all of your necessities are taken care of, additional income does not add to happiness levels.

Closing Thoughts

I hope this has given you some things to think about. I also hope you don’t take this as me saying money is bad. I don’t think that at all.

Money is just a tool in my opinion. One we have the ability to direct.

My hope is that this makes you pause to think about your life, about the role money plays in it, and if there are any changes you’d like to make or you’ve wanted to make, but haven’t yet.

I know the more I learn and the more I contemplate the correlation between money and happiness, the more I consider how money impacts my family and my life.

I’m personally several years into a journey towards contentment. I think it’s a journey I’ll be on the rest of my life, but one I continue to make progress on.

If you’d like to discuss what you’ve read above or just have a discussion about wealth and contentment, I’d love to chat with you.

You can schedule a call here.

Monthly Minute

Be on the lookout this quarter for more helpful information on money, happiness, and contentment in our upcoming Monthly Minute releases.

Get to Know Our Team

This past quarter our team had some exciting things happen.

In January, Lee and his wife Susanne celebrated twelve years of marriage and 17 years of being together.

February was a big month for Lee.
Happy New Year!

First of all, Happy New Year to everyone! I hope you had a great break and you were able to relax and enjoy some time with your family.

As we roll into a new year, there’s always some excitement surrounding what’s possible. Whether it be new year’s resolutions, the prospect of growing your family, or the thought of finally taking that leap and starting your own business, the beginning of a new year brings with it a sense of hope.

Throughout this quarter, we want to help harness that hope and share some ways to help steer it in the direction you want to go.

First Things First

The first thing we would recommend doing is taking some time to assess how you did in 2021. This process will look different for everyone, but we broke this down into two categories/life stages; pre-retirement and in retirement.

Pre-Retirement

We fully understand that this stage of life is very broad. This could include a young person fresh out of college with a lot of debt, a middle-aged person with a family and growing career, as well as empty nesters with retirement right on the horizon.

With that being said, we want to lay out some questions we believe would be helpful to ask yourself for most people who fall in this category.

How much did you save last year?

We believe asking this as a percentage of your income is the best way to answer this question.

A good goal is to be saving 15-20% of your income.

Are you putting your money towards the best (most efficient and/or most important) thing?

Are you saving a lot for retirement, but carrying a bunch of high interest credit card debt?

Is travel with your family important to you, but you’re not saving for that?

If you have a financial plan, how are you tracking towards your goals?

Retirement, kid’s college, vacation home, travel…etc?

Do you need to make adjustments to your saving, spending, or your goals?

Retirement

Just like people working towards retirement, we understand having retirement as a category/life stage is broad as well. This could include someone who retired yesterday as well as someone who has been retired for thirty years and anywhere in between.

We believe the following questions can be helpful for most who fall into the category of retired.

How much did you spend last year?

Was it more or less than you projected?

If it was significantly different, why? Was this because of a one time expense or something that will continue?

Are you doing the things that make you happy?

Are you doing the traveling you’d hoped to do?

Are you getting to spend the time you’d hoped for with your family? If not, is there something you can do to change this?

Are there any hobbies you thought you’d be doing, but aren’t?
What is Generosity?

The University of Notre Dame’s “Science of Generosity Project” defines generosity as: “the virtue of giving good things to others freely and abundantly.”

I love this definition. It’s so simple, yet broad enough to allow our minds to expand on it. It also leads us to ask some follow-up questions.

What are “good things?”

How frequent is “freely?”

How do you define “abundantly?”

Part of me wishes there was an exact answer to these questions. That would make it easy to determine whether or not we are generous.

Another part of me is learning to lean into the not knowing from a tangible standpoint. To me, genuine generosity is from the heart, it’s experienced, and more than anything it’s love.

What Does Generosity Look Like?

We’ve done our best to define generosity, but what does it look like? For me, it was my grandpa (Papa).

My Papa was the most generous man I knew. I have a feeling anyone else who knew him well probably felt the same.

He passed away a little over a month ago and it’s been really hard on my family and me.

One of the things that has helped us/me mourn is the stories we’re hearing about interactions other people had with him.

I wanted to take this quarter’s newsletter to honor Papa and the example he set of what it means to be generous.

Good Things

In the definition above, we talked about giving “good things” to others. What constitutes good things?

One of the big things I noticed in my grandpa was that he always gave his full attention when talking to someone. He was present. When he spoke to you, you knew he was listening and you knew he cared.

He gave his time. When it came to people, he was not in a hurry. If someone showed up to the store (he owned a retail clothing store since 1965) right before closing time, he would tell them to “c’mon in”. He would help them find what they needed.

He gave his love. Anyone that knew Papa, knew how much he loved people. He loved his family and was a big family man, but also made others feel like family.

He gave of his talents and gifts. Papa volunteered in his church for many years. He always had a beaming welcoming personality and gave that to his church to greet people as they came in on Sunday mornings. Whether it was their first time or they’d been coming for years, he made them feel welcome.

He also gave financially. He did this by supporting the church, non-profits, and other things. He also did this by making big price cuts or just giving clothes/shoes away for customers that may not be able to pay. He always picked up the check (you had to sneak your card to the waitress to beat him to it) and looked for ways to help out.

These are just some of the “good things” that he gave.

Freely

To me giving freely, means that you have no expectations of anything in return.

This was how Papa always gave. He never expected anything in return and didn’t give to someone hoping it would come back to him somehow.

After he passed, I learned of one example of him giving freely. It was something he did on more than one occasion as well.

Papa would find out that someone locked their keys in their car after they had finished shopping in his store. He would ask them if they had a spare set at home. After they told him they did, he would, without hesitation, give them the keys to his truck and tell them to go get the spare keys.

He gave out of the goodness of his heart. He truly believed and took heart in Jesus’ words: “it is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35b.

Abundantly

What does it mean to give abundantly?

To me, it means to make it a part of your disposition, a part of who you are. It’s not calculated, it’s genuine and from the heart.

My Papa followed Jesus and there are a few verses that he lived out and do a pretty good job describing having an abundant mindset when it comes to giving.

“Freely you have received, freely give” Matthew 10:8b

“Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.” 1 Tim 6:18

What Does this lead to?

It seems like someone that generous would have nothing or always be stretched thin. That’s the lie we tell ourselves.

My Papa was a genuinely happy man. He truly enjoyed helping people, he loved his family, and he was loved by many.

He truly believed (and experienced) the next part of the verse quoted above: “so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.” 1 Tim 6:19b.

Papa gave many good things both freely and abundantly and he got to experience the good life. My hope is that his story will encourage you to consider being more generous.

Monthly Minute

We truly believe that generosity and giving starts in the heart. Let me define them first.

An HSA is an account that is set up with a trustee that allows you to save money that can later be used for medical expenses.

Why I Love HSAs

In my opinion, an HSA is the best place you can save money. The tax benefits don’t get any better.

All of the money you personally save is tax deductible. This, like a traditional IRA or 401(k) reduces your taxable income by the amount you save.

You can invest the money you save and pay no taxes on interest, dividends, or capital gains distributions. This is the same as both a traditional and Roth IRA or 401(k).

Lastly, you pay no taxes when you pull the money out if the money is used for medical expenses (see below for further explanation). This is like a Roth IRA or 401(k).

As mentioned in the 3rd bullet point, the money you take out is tax free for medical expenses. The added benefit to this is that the medical expense doesn’t have to be current. They just have to have occurred after you established the HSA.

After that, as long as you save the receipts for your medical expenses, you can pull out tax free money from your account at any point in the future.

Once you’ve turned 65, you can pull the money out for non medical expenses and it’s taxed like your traditional 401(k) is as well.

What’s The Downside?

The biggest downside to these plans is that everyone is not eligible. You must have a high-deductible healthcare plan (HDHP) that is HSA eligible.

Some families who have high annual medical expenses may be better off paying a higher monthly premium to lower their total out of pocket costs.

The only other downside in my opinion is that there is a limit on how much you can contribute annually. That limit is significantly less than a 401(k) and even an IRA.

For individuals in 2021, the limit is $3,600. For families, it’s $7,200.

GET TO KNOW OUR TEAM

A lot has happened this past quarter.
